Nearly 3,500 state workers will stay on the job after they and their union brethren overwhelmingly passed a new contract that calls for three years of basic wage freezes, furlough days and higher health insurance premium contributions.

The Public Employees Federation, facing layoffs that were due to take effect tomorrow, announced today that its members ratified the four-year contract by 70-30 percent – 27,718 to 11,645.

With one union contract ratified and a second ratification pending, the Oceana County Board of Commissioners Oct. 27 approved three percent wage increases for all its elected, appointed and regular employees as it adopted its 2012 general fund budget.

Wage increases also will be given to union members in the Oceana County Sheriff

California Enacts Eerily Familiar “Wage Theft Prevention Act” : Wage and Hour Law Update

In April, we addressed at length new York’s newly-enacted “Wage Theft Prevention Act.” Now, through Assembly bill 469, California has adopted a nearly identical law, the California Wage Theft Prevention Act. Effective January 1, 2012, the law increases the penalties available under existing provisions of the California Labor Code, and adds a detailed notice requirement to employees, echoing the requirements recently imposed on employers by N.Y. Labor Law § 195.

Contra Costa and its sheriffs deputies reach tentative contract

MARTINEZ — Contra Costa County and its deputy sheriffs have reached a tentative contract.

Sen. Marc Pacheco proposes minimum wage raise

Calling it a matter of “economic justice,” state Sen. Marc Pacheco, D-Taunton, has filed legislation to incrementally raise the state’s minimum wage to $10 per hour over two years, which would likely make it the highest in the nation.

“Massachusetts is one of the highest wage rate bases in the nation, so this should put us as one of the highest minimum wages in the nation,” Pacheco said. “I think it’s a matter of economic justice and fairness.”
